HAZRAT KHALID BIN WALID (RA)
HAZRAT KHALID BIN WALID (RA)
Hazrat khalid bin walid (RA) was one of the companions of Prophet Mohammad(SAW). He was the son of Al walid bin mughirah ( a staunch enemy of islam) . He commanded the meccans polytheists army in battle of uhud. He was managed to rout the muslims from the battlefield up onto the slopes of uhud. During the period of treaty of Hudaibiyah Hazrat Khalid bin walid(RA) left mecca and joined Prophet Mohammad(SAW) in medina and embraced Islam. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) appointed him as as the commander of the army to be sent to crush the apostates(false prophets). He was well known throughout Arabia peninsula. He had not lost a single battle he had fought in, both before and after conversion to Islam. His familiarity with desert warfare and mastery of cavalry made him the obvious choice to lead the expedition. After successfully defending medina from any possible attacks by the rebels . He led the army eastward to where numerous rebelling tribes were based . Musaylima’s (false prophet) forces were no match for the military ability of Khalid(RA).The rebels were routed and musaylima was killed in battle. During the caliphate of Hazrat omar(RA), Khalid(RA) was ordered to immediately leave Iraq, where he had already some success, and travel across the waterless Syrian desert to reinforce the armies there. The combined muslim forces met the byzantines at the battle of Ajnadayn about thirty kilometers west of jerusalam , where the muslim armies completely routed the imperial force. The muslim armies under the command of Khalid(RA) moved north and laid siege to the ancient city of Damascus , which fell in September 635 AD. To help sort out the civil administration of the region, Hazrat omar(RA) personally travelled from medina to Syria. One of his first actions in the country was to relieve Hazrat Khalid bin walid(RA) of his post of military commander. This shocked everyone, including Khalid(RA) himself. Among many possible reasons for forcing Khalid(RA) into retirement , muslim historians in the past tended to settle on omar(RA) desire to remind the muslim armies that Allah , not Khalid (RA) was the reason for their victories.
