MUGHAL’S CONTRIBUTION IN ART AND CRAFT
1) PAINTINGS- The golden period of paintings was the Mughal era. The Mughal style of paintings is also known as Agra style style of paintings. Miniature paintings were brought to India by the Mughals who were assisted by the Persians, It was started by Humayun. These paintings depict the events and lifestyles of the Mughals. Humayun appointed Persian artists Mir Syed Ali and Khwaja Abdus samad to his court. The Mughal period during the Emperor Jahangir is known as the Golden Era of arts and paintings. 2) CARPET- Agra in Uttar Pradesh was the First carpet centre in the Mughal India. The carpets of Uttar Pradesh come with hand imprinted or hand carved borders in rose beige, honey, ivory and Iraq green colour.
3) CHIKANKARI- This work came onto existence by Empress Nur Jahan wife of Emperor Jahangir. This delicate art of embroidery and is derived from the Persian word ‘chikan’ meaning cloth wrought by needle work. It is basically done on fabric using white thread; There are two types of chikan embroidery, flat and embossed. Motifs and Mughals architectural themes are made in salwar suits, tables or household linen and saress, the bel or creeper is the most commonly used design. This handicraft is mainly practiced in Lucknow. Fish is very common motif in Lucknow as it was the emblem of the Court of Awadh.
4) ZARDOZI- The zardozi craft or silver and gold embroidery was brought into the country in the 12th century by Afghans. This work done on various items such as textiles, artefacts, drapes and sarees.
5) INLAY WORK- Agra is very famous for this work. This work has been introduces by the Mughals. Some examples of this work are the decorations on Taj Mahal and Palace of Akbar at Agra.
6) STONE CRAFT-The stone crafts of Uttar Pradesh has flourished to a great extent due to Muslim rulers. The stone craft of Uttar Pradesh reached the zenith of excellence during the Mughal period when the Taj Mahal was made. The famous among the stone crafts of Uttar Pradesh is the mosaic work of Taj mahal and Fatehpur sikri.
