SHEIKH MUJADDID ALF E SANI (R.AH.)

SHEIKH MUJADDID ALF E SANI (R.AH.)

Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi (Mujaddid Alf e Sani) was born in 1564. His lineage goes back to Hazrat Omar(RA). He received his early education from his father Sheikh Abdul Ahad. Then he went to Silakot for further studies, Silakot was the centre of knowledge of that time. He was a disciple of Sheikh Baqi Billah (R.AH.)

After completing his education, he went to Sialkot, Punjab for preaching of Islam. At that time Islam was badly distorting in the wake of ‘Deen e Ilahi’ coined by Mughal Emperor Akbar, Islam was losing its basic spirit. There was a need of a man who could counter these Heresies. After the death of Akbar, His son Jahangir continued his father teachings. Mujaddid Alf e Sani raised voice against Deen e Ilahi, hence got imprisoned by Jahangir. Allama Iqbal has written a couplet for him relating to this incident:

“Gardan na jhuki jiski Jahangir ke aage

Jiski nafs e garam se hai garmai ahraar

Wo Hind me Sarmaya e Millat ka Nigehbaan

Allah ne Barwaqt kiya jisko khabardar”

Jahangir imprisoned him for 2 years, but suddenly he fell ill, his courtiers told him to release Mujaddid Alf e Sani. Jahangir ordered his release but sheikh refused and demanded to first ban ‘Deen e Ilahi’. Jahangir accepted that. Gradually Jahangir started recovering and came on right path. It was because of his efforts that succeeding emperor like Shahjahan was more pious and later Aurangzeb was a highly religious man. He also countered Sufi Philosophy of Wahdat ul Wajood(Pre Islamic philosophy of Pantheism) as it was full of polytheism and heresies and proposed a new reformed philosophy of Wahdat ul Shahood( Unanimous to Hanafi school). He was died in 1624. His tomb is located in Sirhind, Punjab (India).
