*Hazrat Ayyub, peace be upon him*[Job]

Imam Ibn Ishaq states that he was of Roman descent, and his lineage is as follows: Ayyub son of Razih son of Esau son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah. And this is correct — that he was from the progeny of Esau bin Ishaq.[Isaac][Abraham]

About his respected wife, it is said that she was Laya, the daughter of Yaqub. Some say she was Rahmah, the daughter of Ephraim. Some say she was the daughter of Manasseh and her name was Laya.[Jacob]

The scholars of tafsir and historians state that Ayyub was a wealthy man. He possessed every kind of wealth — for example, slaves, animals, livestock — and he also had vast lands in the region of Sham. Besides that, he had a wife and many children.[Syria]

All of that was taken from him and he was put through trial after trial. Despite that, he remained patient for the pleasure of Allah and remembered Allah day and night, morning and evening. Gradually his wealth was gone. His wife began working for others to arrange for his food and medicine.

In the Bible, the incident of Hazrat Ayyub losing his wealth and children and being afflicted with physical illness is described in great detail. Allah knows best how much of that is accurate.

Hazrat Mujahid, may Allah have mercy on him, says that Ayyub was first afflicted with smallpox. Regarding how long his trial continued, there are various reports from the scholars. Hazrat Wahb said: He remained in that condition for a full three years — neither less nor more.

Suddi, may Allah have mercy on him, says: The flesh had fallen from his body; only bones and sinews remained. His respected wife would bring ashes and place them beneath him.

When a long time had passed in such a state, she submitted, “Pray to your Lord that He remove your affliction.” He said, “I spent 70 years in good health — should I not be patient for the sake of Allah for 70 years?”

His wife was very distressed to hear this reply, because she served people to earn a livelihood and arrange food for Ayyub. As time passed, conditions became harder and harder even for his devoted and faithful wife, and even Hazrat Ayyub’s own relatives began to turn away from him when they saw his severe trial.

Hazrat Ayyub beseeched in the court of Allah and prayed for health and healing. Allah the Exalted accepted his prayer and commanded him to bathe from the spring of cleansing, which had sprung forth when he struck the ground with his heel.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that Allah the Exalted clothed Ayyub in a garment of Paradise. Having regained his health and wearing the heavenly garment, he sat to one side. When his respected wife came, she did not recognize him.
