*Makhdoom Hazrat Syed Husain Sharafuddin Shah Wilayat*
Hazrat Shah Wilayat Sahib was born in 653 AH, corresponding to 1252 CE. Shah Wilayat’s great ancestor, Hazrat Syed Harun, who was a grandson of the 10th Imam Hazrat Ali Naqi, had migrated from Madinah to a town near Baghdad in Iraq. Because Syed Harun was the last ancestor of Shah Wilayat Sahib who lived in Arabia, and after him his subsequent ancestors came to Iran, Shah Sahib described himself as “Wasti.” Later, from Iran, via Sindh, the distinguished lineage continued to flourish in Hindustan.
Shah Sahib’s father came in the form of a caravan, brought everyone to [place unclear in source], and then permanently settled in Amroha. In Amroha, the arrival of Makhdoom Miran Syed Ali, the elder, took place in 1268 CE with a large accompanying group, and Shah Wilayat Sahib was also part of it. This was the time when, immediately after Balban’s rule, the reign of Firoz Shah was beginning. In time, a few years later, Sultan Firoz Shah became a devotee of Shah Wilayat’s spiritual stature and then became his disciple.
At the time of Shah Wilayat’s arrival, there was a tyrannical administrator in Amroha from whom everyone was troubled. Shah Wilayat Sahib was married to Syeda Fatima Tahira, the younger daughter of Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari — the great ancestor of the Bukhari Syeds — and the paternal aunt of the famous saint Syed Jalaluddin, known as Makhdum Jahanian Jahan Gasht.
Historians record that he had three sons and one daughter. The eldest son was Hazrat Qazi Syed Amir Ali, who was appointed Qazi-ul-Quzzat of the kingdom during Firoz Shahi times. He was a major landholder of Amroha. He had three sons: Syed Ashraf Jahangir, Syed Mahmud Salar, and Tajuddin. In Amroha, Mohalla Khwaja is associated with them.
The second son was Hazrat Syed Abdul Aziz. History tells us that when he went to Delhi for higher education, Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq honored him with a grand robe of honor befitting a ruler and married his daughter Zubaida Khatun to him. This saint passed away in Delhi a few months after the marriage and was buried there. The princess, like her father Firoz Shah Tughlaq, was a disciple of Shah Wilayat. During her stay in Delhi she became pregnant. After her husband’s death, she left the royal court and came to her father-in-law’s house in Amroha. When a son was born in Amroha, the daughter-in-law had him placed at the feet of his grandfather.
Shah Wilayat Sahib’s house in Amroha was in the present-day Mohalla Pachhdara, near Imambara Baliyan. Even today there is a platform there associated with Shah Wilayat Sahib. It is said that when Shah Sahib came here from Iran Sarai, the world traveler Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta came to Amroha in 1340 CE during Hazrat Shah’s lifetime and had the honor of meeting him in the last phase of Shah Sahib’s life. Ibn Battuta wrote in his travelogue that during that time Shah Sahib and his elder companion honored him.
The Urs of Hazrat Syed Husain Sharafuddin Shah Wilayat Sahib is observed for four days, from 18th to 21st Rajab, on the occasion of his death anniversary.
