Here’s the English translation:
*Imam al-Tabarani*
Ayyub al-Tabarani, who is generally known by his _nisba_, although _Mu'jam_ texts never received the same respect given to the _Mu'jams_ of Abu al-Qasim Sulayman ibn Ahmad ibn Sunan, many were compiled and are still widely used.
Tabarani was born in 260 AH / 873 CE in Tiberias, which at that time was a prosperous Muslim city. During his academic journeys, he visited most of the important centers of learning in Syria, Egypt, the Hijaz, Iraq, and Iran, and received traditions from nearly a thousand narrators.
He finally settled in Isfahan in 290 AH / 902 CE, where a pension was fixed for him. There he lived a calm and peaceful life for 70 years, teaching hadith and compiling many books on the subject, and eventually passed away in 360 AH / 970 CE at the age of one hundred.
Among his works listed by al-Dhahabi, the most important are his three _Mu'jams_. The largest of these, commonly known as _al-Mu'jam al-Kabir_ [The Great Mu'jam], is in fact a _Musnad_. It contains about 25,000 narrations compiled under the names of the various Companions by whom they are reported, and the names are presented in alphabetical order.
The 'Middle' _Mu'jam_ [_al-Mu'jam al-Awsat_] is in six volumes, and includes the rare traditions narrated to the compiler by his teachers, whose names, along with their traditions, are given in alphabetical order. The author was very proud of this work, which, despite containing many weak traditions, attests to his extensive knowledge of the subject.
Finally, there is Tabarani’s _Short Mu'jam_ [_al-Mu'jam al-Saghir_], which, according to his own statement, was his first _Mu'jam_, and includes only one tradition narrated by each of his teachers.
Although these are the most famous works of this type, many other _Mu'jam_ works were also compiled, some of which have been listed by Haji Khalifa.
Note: The text contains a few errors in the original: "Ayyub al-Tabarani" should be "Abu al-Qasim Sulayman ibn Ahmad al-Tabarani", and "ibn Sunan" seems to be a misreading of _sunan_ works. I preserved the source text as written and translated it directly.
