*Imam Abu Hanifah – Part 1*
Among the four Imams of Fiqh, the greatest was Imam Abu Hanifah. His real name was Nu‘man bin Thabit. His title was Imam al-A‘zam and his kunyah was Abu Hanifah. He was born in 680 CE in Kufa. His father traded in cloth. He was of Persian descent.
Kufa was established during the time of Hazrat Umar Faruq. For the education, training, and propagation of religious knowledge in that city, Hazrat Umar sent Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, who was a high-ranking scholar and Companion of the Messenger (peace be upon him). From the last period of Hazrat Uthman Ghani until the caliphate, he spread the light of knowledge and culture in Kufa. As a result, according to some Muhaddithin, 4,000 scholars and Muhaddithin emerged in Kufa. When Hazrat Ali came there, Kufa had already become a center of knowledge and civilization. Hazrat Ali made it the seat of the caliphate. Imam Abu Hanifah’s father, Hazrat Nu‘man, presented himself in the service of Hazrat Ali. Accordingly, Hazrat Ali prayed for blessings for him and his offspring.
*Education and Upbringing* — At the time of Imam Abu Hanifah’s birth, the Umayyad rule had already been established, and besides the Qur’an and Hadith, an environment of _Kalam_ and poetry and literature had also developed. Likewise, religious debates had also begun. It was the era of Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud and Hazrat Ali’s student, Imam Nakha‘i. Abu Hanifah acquired education in memorization and recitation, Hadith, literature, and _Kalam_, and then studied Fiqh.[theology]
In Imam Abu Hanifah’s early period, four Companions were alive: in Kufa Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Awfa, in Madinah Hazrat Sahl bin Sa‘d, and in Makkah Hazrat Abu Tufayl Amir bin Wathilah. According to Allama Shibli Nomani and Shaykh Abu Zahrah Misri, Imam Abu Hanifah had the honor of meeting these gentlemen, but it is not established whether Imam Sahib benefited from any of these Companions or not. However, there is no doubt that Imam Sahib acquired knowledge from Muhaddithin.
Imam Sahib says: “One day I was going to the market. Imam Sha‘bi’s house was on the way. He came out in front of me and asked me: ‘Where do you keep coming and going?’ I said: ‘To the market.’ Imam Sha‘bi said: ‘I see ability in you. You should adopt the study of knowledge and the company of scholars.’” His advice had an effect on his heart, and he turned toward acquiring knowledge.
According to Allama Dhahabi, Imam Abu Hanifah benefited from Muhaddithin in Hadith.
