*Hazrat Hud (Peace be upon him) – Part 1*
*Name, Lineage, and Region:*
The lineage of Hazrat Hud (Peace be upon him) is: Hud bin Shalikh bin Arfakhshadh bin Sam bin Nuh (Peace be upon him). According to one report, the name of Hud (Peace be upon him) was ‘Abir, who was the son of Sam. His lineage is also stated like this: Hud bin Abdullah bin Rabah al-Jabbar bin ‘Ad bin Iram bin Sam bin Nuh. He belonged to the tribe of ‘Ad. It was an Arab tribe whose settlements were in the area of sand dunes between Oman and Hadhramaut. This region was located on the seacoast and was known by the name of Al-Ahqaf, and these people mostly lived in tall-pillared tents.
As Allah Ta‘ala says: _“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad — Iram of the pillars — the likes of whom had not been created in the lands?”_ Meaning, there were no people like them in any other region.
It is said that Hazrat Hud was the first to speak the Arabic language. However, Wahb bin Munabbih states that the father of Hud (Peace be upon him) was the first to speak Arabic.
After the Flood of Nuh, the people of ‘Ad — the first ‘Ad — were the first to adopt idol worship. It is also said they had three idols named Samad, Samud, and Hira.
So Allah Ta‘ala sent their brother Hud (Peace be upon him) as a prophet and made him beloved. He called his people to Allah. After mentioning the story of Hazrat Nuh in Surah Al-A‘raf, Allah Ta‘ala says:
_And to ‘Ad We sent their brother Hud. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not then fear Him?”_
_The chiefs of his people who disbelieved said, “Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars.”_
_He said, “O my people, there is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds. I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser. Do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you? And remember when He made you successors after the people of Nuh and increased you in stature extensively. So remember the favors of Allah that you might succeed.”_
_They said, “Have you come to us that we should worship Allah alone and leave what our fathers used to worship? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful.”_
_Hud said, “Punishment and wrath from your Lord have already fallen upon you. Do you dispute with me concerning names which you and your fathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait.”_
_So We saved Hud and those who were with him, and We cut off the roots of those who denied Our signs, and they were not believers._
