Hazrat Hud (Peace be upon him) – Part 2
Hazrat Hud (Peace be upon him) asked Allah Ta‘ala for help against
his people, because the nation had refused to accept any of his advice and had
denied him. So he pleaded to Allah Ta‘ala: “My Lord, they have denied me, so
help me.” Allah Ta‘ala said: “In a little while they will be regretful.” Then a
cloud came. In accordance with the threat, a mighty sound seized them, and We
made them like rubbish. So a curse is upon the wrongdoing people.
Allah Ta‘ala said further about them: They said, “Have you come to
us to turn us away from our gods? Then bring upon us what you threaten us with,
if you are truthful.” He said, “Knowledge of it is only with Allah, and I
convey to you that with which I was sent, but I see that you are a people
behaving ignorantly.”
Then when they saw the punishment — a cloud coming toward their
nation — they said, “This is a cloud bringing us rain.” No, rather it was the
punishment you were seeking to hasten — a wind in which is a painful
punishment, destroying everything by the command of its Lord. Then they became
such that nothing was to be seen except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense
the criminal people.
Then We saved Hud and those who were with him, and We cut off the
roots of those who denied Our signs, and they were not believers. The detailed
account has already passed with reference to Surah Al-Ahqaf. It mentions the
onset of the punishment: first, rain was withheld from them and they fell into
drought. They prayed for rain. After that they saw a cloud in the sky, and they
thought it was a rain cloud of mercy, though it was a cloud of punishment.
Allah kept it blowing upon them for seven nights and seven days
continuously — that is, a full week of violent wind blew without break.
According to one report, this storm of punishment occurred on a Friday. And
according to one report, people were seen lying fallen in it like hollow trunks
of palm trees. We sent upon them a furious wind on a day of continuous
misfortune. It uprooted the people as if they were trunks of uprooted palm
trees. So We sent upon them a raging wind during days of misfortune.
