*Hazrat Idris (Peace be upon him)*

Hazrat Idris (Peace be upon him) was born in the city of Manf, i.e., Memphis in Egypt. People call him “Harmas al-Haramisa.” This is a word from the Syriac language. _Harmas_ means experienced and of firm opinion. Some hold the view that he was born in the city of Babylon, then migrated and reached Egypt.

According to most scholars of genealogy, Hazrat Idris (Peace be upon him) is included in the lineage of the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). After Adam and Shith (Peace be upon them), he was the first to be honored with prophethood.

The name of Hazrat Idris (Peace be upon him) appears in the Holy Qur’an in two places. Allah Ta‘ala says: _“And mention, O Prophet, Ismail, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl. All were of the patient. And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous.”_

And in another place Allah Ta‘ala said: _“And mention in this sacred Book, the Qur’an, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth, a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”_

Ka‘b said: Allah Ta‘ala revealed to Idris (Peace be upon him), “I will add to your deeds every day the equivalent of the deeds of all the children of Adam.” In his heart arose the desire that his good deeds should increase greatly.

A friend of his, an angel, came to him. He said to him, “Speak to the Angel of Death on my behalf so that I may be granted more time and I can do more good deeds.” The angel concealed him on his wings and took him up to the heaven. On the fourth heaven he met the Angel of Death coming from above. He spoke to the Angel of Death about the matter that Idris (Peace be upon him) had mentioned.

The Angel of Death said, “And where is Idris (Peace be upon him)?” He said, “He is on my back.” The Angel of Death said, “How strange! I was sent and the command came to me to take the soul of Idris (Peace be upon him) in the fourth heaven.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas‘ud and Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) that Ilyas and Idris (Peace be upon them) are two names of the same person. When he passed by the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he welcomed him saying, “Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous prophet.”

Imam Ibn Ishaq (May Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that Hazrat Idris (Peace be upon him) was the first to write with a pen. At the time of his birth, Hazrat Adam (Peace be upon him) was alive, and at the time of Adam’s (Peace be upon him) death, his age was 308 years.
