*Childhood and Early Years*
Ibn Khaldun was born on 27 May 1332 CE [Ramadan 1, 732 AH] in Tunis. He received a traditional education typical of his family’s rank and status. He first learned at the hands of his father, who was a learned man not involved in politics like his ancestors. He memorized the Quran by heart and studied grammar, jurisprudence, Hadith, rhetoric, philology, and poetry.
At Fort Salama, at the age of forty-five, he enjoyed a peaceful existence and began writing his famous _Muqaddimah_, and the first edition of his _Universal History_. He was warmly welcomed by scholars and students in Cairo, where he spent his final days. His writings had already preceded him there. He taught at al-Azhar and other prestigious schools. He had the opportunity to meet Sultan al-Zahir Barquq, who appointed him to a teaching position.
