Old Mosques of Amroha
1) Masjid Jama-e-Kalan
From what has come before this
author, it appears that this mosque was built during the era of Akbar, at a
time when, due to some reason related to Masjid-e-Qaqabadi, there was no other
mosque left in Amroha for Friday prayers. In the Mughal era, 8 bighas of land
were granted by the Islamic government for the maintenance of this mosque in
Mauza Shah Prak Sarai, which people mistakenly call Pilak Sarai.
2) Masjid Abbasian
The mosque of Muhammad Maulana
Muhammad Abbasi, may Allah have mercy on him, in Mohalla Maulana was built
during the reign of Akbar by this humble author’s great-grandfather Maulana
Muhammad Abbasi, adjacent to his house. It is the property of Qazi Ibn Abbas
Sahib Abbasi.
When Maulana Masood, in his later
years, retired from royal service and returned to his homeland, he used to
teach in this very mosque. The expenses for the upkeep of this mosque were paid
by the Islamic government. The royal decree of Emperor Alamgir, may Allah
illuminate his proof, dated 1075 Hijri, regarding the grant, is still with this
author.
3) Chilla’s Mosque
It was built in 1029 Hijri by
Raja Syed Abdul Qasim, son of Syed Muhammad Mir Adl.
4) Masjid Dargah Malik
Shahdara Haji Sulaiman
Located in Mohalla Shahi
Chabutra. This mosque was built in 1022 Hijri by Sheikh Mansoor bin Sheikh
Bhairu, descendant of Sheikh Tajuddin. Before this, there was also an old
mosque at this site from the early days of the arrival of Muslims. Inside the
mosque, in the _mihrab_, a stone bears an inscription.
5) Masjid Jama Amroha
This magnificent and beautiful
mosque is located near Talab Panwadi, adjacent to Maulana. Earlier, the mosque
consisted of only a rear chamber with a small courtyard. It was built around
1170 CE by Syed Abdul Khaliq bin Diwan Syed Muhammad bin Syed Abdul Majid bin
Syed Abdul Khaliq bin Syed Shahbul Hasan bin Syed Muhammad Mir Adl, adjacent to
his family graveyard.
Besides this family’s graveyard,
at this site where the courtyard enclosure, _hauz_, etc. are now, there were
also some graves of individuals from other old families.
About 20 years later, when Hazrat
Maulana Maulvi Ahmad Hasan Muhaddis Amrohvi returned to Amroha in 1301 Hijri
after retiring from Madrasa Shahi, Moradabad, Madrasa Islamia was established
in this mosque. Maulana Masood appointed Hafiz Syed Meharban Ali as Imam for
Friday prayers, and Friday congregations flourished.
