Old Mosques of Amroha – Part 2
1) Shaira’s Mosque
This is located near Katra Ghulam Ali. In 1040 Hijri, Kamal Khan,
Mukhtar-e-Aam of Syed Ibrahim Syed Akhir, built it near the caravanserai.
2) Masjid Syed Abdul Muhammad
This beautiful mosque is located in Bheruji, adjacent to Mohalla
Lakda. Syed Abdul Muhammad bin Syed Munawwar had it built in 1141 Hijri. As per
the following inscription engraved on stone: “Syed Abdul Muhammad, Sunni by
creed, was a witness, Sufi, and elder.”
3) Masjid Mir Kallu
In 1172 Hijri, this spacious and beautiful mosque along with a
madrasa building was constructed by Syed Asadullah Khan alias Mir Kallu,
adjacent to his house in Mohalla Gujri. And he endowed a _mauza_
[village/revenue estate] for its expenses. Like Syed Abdul Muhammad, Mir Kallu
was also a follower of his ancestral creed, Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamaat.
4) Masjid Basri Begum
This spacious and beautiful mosque is located near Moradabad
Darwaza. Basri Begum, wife of Syed Ghulam Husain Khan, Naib of Rampur State,
and daughter of Syed Faiz Ali bin Syed Afzal Ali bin Syed Muhammad Fazil,
grandson of Diwan Syed Mahmud, had this mosque built in 1108 Hijri. Inside the
mosque is also the grave of Basri Begum.
5) Masjid Hafiz Abbas Ali Khan
Initially this was a small mosque, built during the reign of Shah
Jahan by Sheikh Aziz. It was incomplete and spacious. Some years after 1857,
Hafiz Abbas Ali Khan, in 1853, filed a suit in the court of the Judge of Moradabad
against the Dakhaliya Abadi of this mosque, contrary to _tubad mashhoor_
[well-known tradition]. The suit was decreed. _Tubad mashhoor_ appealed to Mr.
Wilson, Judge, and succeeded. Hafiz Sahib appealed to the High Court, Agra. The
decision there was in favor of Hafiz Sahib, but before he could get possession,
the uprising of 1857 occurred.
6) Masjid Nanhi Khan
This beautiful, elegant mosque is located outside the city to the
south, in Nehawala Bagh.
7) Masjid Mohalla Shafat Pota
This mosque is not of Islamic-era construction, but it has its own
distinction. There was a small mosque here earlier, which was completed in 1233
CE by Haji Sheikh Ashraf Ali Azimabadi, who had settled in Amroha. The author
of _Tarikh-e-Askari_ has written the reason for it: When Maulvi Syed Muhammad
Ibadat Sahib, Pesh Imam of Amroha, due to lack of a mosque, used to lead
congregational prayers in the Imambara, Haji Sahib built this small mosque. But
later, due to the large number of worshippers, there was always a tussle over
the first congregation.
