Residents of Amroha – Part 3
Pathans
In Amroha there are many families who use the word
"Khan" with their names, but in lineage they are not Khans. Among
them are some from the Sayyid and Kamboh-Kalal families, whose ancestors were
given the title of Khan during the native states. Their descendants still use
the word Khan with their names to express this family distinction.
Apart from them, there are a few families of genuine Pathans and
Khans present here: the Mastan family – Abu Khan, residents of Mohalla Cha
Mullaman; the Bas family – residents of Mohalla Niyaziyan; Katkoi, etc.
Bawarchi (Cooks)
For a long time, families of Bawarchis have been settled in
Amroha. They worked as cooks. People call themselves Mughals. Now they have
taken up other work as well.
Carpenters and Blacksmiths
Most of their population is in Mohalla Maulana, Haqqani,
Baswangunj, Begum Sarai Kalan, and Batwal. The carpenters and blacksmiths here
are extremely skilled artisans. The charpoys of Bakchha are their special
craft. They make doors and beams of excellent quality. They do every kind of
construction work incomparably. Mistri Hafeezullah, resident of Mohalla
Maulana, was a famous master craftsman.
Bhats
Their number is very limited. Mostly they live in Mohalla Machhrat
and Moradabad Darwaza. These people are originally from the Bhat lineage, a
large number of whom live in this region.
Bhand / Naqal
Their number is also limited in Amroha. By lineage, they are also
connected to the original Bhands of India, i.e., the Shudra community. Mostly
they live in Mohalla Ahmednagar. They are famous and well-known.
Baz Qasab (Butchers)
Most of their population is in Mohalla Begum Sarai Khurd. These
people follow their ancestral profession.
