Tarikh-e-Amroha – Part 4
Some idea of the conditions of that era can be had from the
following account, which was sent on 13th Jumada al-Thani, 1193 Hijri, from
Nawab Beroz Khan Bahadur to Amir Yadgar Ali, Amir Ali, Amir Qambar Ali Khan,
and Mir Yaseen Ali, residents of Amroha, Mohalla Darbar-e-Kalan, during the
reign of Shah Alam:
In 1193 Hijri, the _amil_ [revenue officer] of Amroha, appointed
here by the oppressive Nawab Wazir-ul-Mulk, acted with such severity and,
contrary to customary practice, made several new demands that a large number of
_ma’afidars_ [holders of revenue-free grants] of Amroha gathered in a meeting
and pledged that they would not agree to any demands beyond the
long-established _nazrana_.[tribute]
In 1805 CE, when Amir Khan reached Amroha, his forces confronted
Captain Moore’s soldiers near Mauza Ibrahim pur, close to Amroha. Fighting went
on all day. In the early period of the East India Company’s dominance, a large
army cantonment was also established in Amroha.
News of the mutiny of the army at Meerut first reached
Amroha-Moradabad on 12 May 1857. About 5-6 days after the news of the uprising
in Meerut and Delhi reached Amroha, probably on 17 May, individuals and leaders
of the family of Diwan Syed Mahmud of Mohalla Darbar Kalan and the family of
Darvesh Ali Khan Kam Kala first convened a consultative assembly at the shrine
of Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat.
In it, capable and respectable persons from various families of
the city were summoned. Approximately people gathered inside the shrine for
this assembly. There was a crowd of attendants of the shrine and leading
citizens of the city.[many]
Among the organizers of the gathering were Syed Muhammad Husain
Khan, Syed Yusuf Ali Khan, Maulvi Syed Qura Wali, Syed Muhammad Baqar, Syed
Muhammad alias Muhammad Shaman, Syed Mubarak, Syed Muhammad Jama, Syed Zulfiqar
Ali, Syed Farhat Ali, Syed Sharaf Ali, Syed Tehsil Ali, Syed Ghulam Sajjad,
etc. Syed Yad Ali, resident of Mohalla Bagla, and Syed Ramzan Ali of Mohalla
Katra Ghulam Ali were also present.
