Tarikh-e-Amroha – Part 5
When the population of the city began to grow, this wall was also
dismantled. However, its gates remained intact until then. If foundations were
dug for any construction in Mohalla Naubat Khana before 1857, large, sturdy
bricks were recovered. The base was so deep that several houses have been built
from its bricks even today, and yet some portion of the middle part still
remains. This was the base of a bastion of that same old wall. Bricks of this
wall have continued to be recovered from various places.
About 2 miles to the north and west, a stepwell is pointed out as
a memorial, which is famous locally as _Bai Ka Kuan_ [Lady’s Well]. It is said
that the stepwell was from the era of Raja Kirpanath, who was a Raja of the
Surajdhaj family of Kayasthas. But from the style of construction, it appears
to be from the Islamic period, or that it was renovated during that time in
this city.
This stepwell is very spacious and less deep, built of kankar
stone. Steps go down to the water, along which verandas have been built. It was
repaired in 1904. Every year, the _Chhariyon ka Mela_ [Fair of Sticks] is held
here.
