WHY PROPHET MUHAMMAD (SAW) MARRIED A GREAT NUMBER OF WOMEN?
Ans: Whoever ponders over the life of Allah's messenger (saw) will conceive that his marriage to this great number of women in the later years life after he had almost spent 30 years of best days. older wife Khadija RA and later on to Sauda RA was in no way and overwhelming the lust ful desire to be satisfied through such a number of women . his marriages were in fact motivated by aims and purposes much more glorious and greater than what normal marriages usually aim .besides this there was that tradition of the Arabs to honour their in law relations for them daughter in law was means by which they Sought the consolidation of relationship and affection with various Tribes . hostility and fights against alliance would bring an unforgettable Shame and disgrace and degradation to them. by marrying the mothers of believers the prophet (saw) wanted to demolish the breakdown the arab tribes enmity to islam and extinguish their intense hatred. One of the greatest motives of all was the responsibility Allah bestowed upon his prophet(saw) to educate and purify the soul of people who knew nothing what so ever about courtesy, education and culture. he had to teach them to comply with the necessity of civilization and to contribute to the solidification and the establishment of a new islamic society. An essential fundamental rule of Muslim society is to prohibit mixing of man and woman providing direct education for women though highly compelling , is possible in the light of this Islamic norm. Therefore prophet(saw) had to select some women of different ages and talents and train them systematically in order to educate the women bedouins and towns women. with the instruments of propagating the true faith. the mothers of believers ( wives of prophet (saw))were in such a convenient position that they could convey the state of the prophet(saw) and his affairs to people. being educated and taught the teachings and rules of Islam. His wives played a very important role in conveying prophetic traditions or Ahadith to the Muslims Ayesha RA for instance related a large number of the prophets deeds and statements. However the treatment of Allah's messenger (saw) to his wives was honorable noble and superb in nature his wives were the best examples in respect of Honor satisfaction patients modesty and wifely duty although the messenger's life was hard and unbearable , none of his wives complained. Anas RA said about prophet's life according to my knowledge Allah's Messenger has never tested a thin flattened loaf in all his lifetime nor has he ever seen roasted goat with his own eyes.Allah gave them(wives of prophet (saw)) opportunity to choose between two things as clearly stated in the following verses: " o prophet Mohammed (saw) say to your wives:' if you desired the life of this world and its glitter. - then come I will make a provision for you and set you free in a handsome manner(divorce) . but if you desire Allah and his messenger and the home of the hereafter , then verily Allah has prepared for al muhsinat( gooddoers) amongst you and enormous reward.
